The mouth of Butterfield Canyon

Southeast Salt Lake County

I remember going camping in Butterfield Canyon when I was a kid, especially winter camps. We would camp out on a Friday evening and then go “tubing” on the snow on the side of the canyon the next morning. My first time camping there I remember sleeping in a giant military tent with a dozen or more other boys, half freezing to death during the night. I’m not sure they allow camping in the canyon any longer. It has turned into a bit of a ghetto canyon. They’ve lined the sides of the lower canyon with concrete barriers in places where they are trying to keep vehicles out, and some of those have been tagged with spray paint. But the mouth of the canyon is still spectacular, and the views farther up the canyon in the early morning light are well worth the drive.
